Help Your Child Overcome Toddler Stuttering

Toddler stuttering is a main concern of most parents

. Sometimes, the parents are even overly concerned with their child. Even though a child has no speech problems at all, just a case of a normal non-fluency, they rush to their speech pathologists to ask if their child is stuttering. Parents must understand the difference between this normal non-fluency and stuttering.

Normal non-fluency is a case of exhibiting a rough flow of words and sentences. Repeating words and pausing are the most common signs of the normal non-fluency. This case often arises during the early years of an individual. Usually, this disruption in speech occurs due to lack of coordination skills and the inability of a child to say things fast as his brain is able to process them. The result is a repeat or pause in between the words of his sentences. You can especially notice this when a child is upset, angry or is expressing his emotions.

On the other hand, toddler stuttering, also known as dysfluency, is different from normal non-fluency in a sense that, stuttering is a childs struggle to say a word smoothly. Stuttering involves repeating or mumbling the first sound or syllable of every word. He fragments his words. He seems to get stuck with every word he wants to say. Additionally, you can notice tension in his jaws and clenching of his fists. He also has the tendency to avoid looking into your eyes when speaking.

For a clearer picture, a stuttering child may speak like this, H-he-hello, h-ho-how a-are y-you? while a child in the temporary phase of normal non-fluency may speak like this, Hello, hello, I-uh, I-how are you? As a parent, you may feel you need something to do about your child during these two instances. For a child in a normal non-fluency phase, you need to help him enhance his coordination skills. You need to understand his situation. You can look him directly in the eyes and tell him that he can take his time in speaking. As for the stuttering child, you may need to consult an expert, usually a speech pathologist.Help Your Child Overcome Toddler Stuttering

A speech pathologist knows how to handle your child best. The speech pathologist may engage your child in a speech therapy to overcome dysfluency. In addition to that, you may also need to follow measures to help your child outgrow the problem. Of course, you can still stop your child from stuttering. He does not necessarily have to suffer with this problem throughout his whole life. However, this problem may affect his adolescence years and adulthood.

To address your childs problem, you, as a parent, must help him with his struggle in toddler stuttering. Do not stress your child or get angry with him for his speech problems. Stress levels must always be kept to the minimum. In addition to that, try to talk to him more often. You may engage him into calm and fun conversations. Always give him your attention when he is talking to you. Let him express his thoughts. In this manner, you are expressing your concern without worrying too much over his situation.
