Heat Treatment: What You Want To Know

There is a myriad of reasons behind why people will use heat treatments on different metals

. Mostly, it is used as a way to control the quality of certain manufactured products. There are some cases that when heat treatments are applied to certain metals the chemical properties of that metal will be changed. The change the happens alters the physical property of said metal.

A person will use heat treatments on metals that they wish to change or alter their properties for a specific need. Sometimes, this may require a combination of different methods like heating and cooling a metal or alloy when it is in a sold state. There will be a number of various techniques used during the process. Basically, all metals are made up of a microstructure that is usually referred to as grains or crystallites.

However, the size and composition of the metals microstructure will in the end dictate how the metal behaves. Whenever you apply heat treatments to a metal, it gives a person the chance to manipulate the properties for a desired purpose. If you wish to succeed in this you must increase the amount of control you have over the rate of diffusion and also the cooling that occurs with the microstructure. Along with industrial blades being used inside of aerospace and other areas similar in nature, a complex schedule of heating will be used by metallurgists so that they can optimize the properties within an alloy.

Therefore, some super alloys will sometimes undergo more than five heat treatments in order to give the desired results. Some of the different techniques used within heat treatments and for the production of industrial blades are things such as annealing, hardening and tempering, precipitation hardening, selective hardening, and case hardening. Usually, when annealing is used, this involves a slow cooling process. Some of the main reasons for its use with steel usually correspond to the removal of stresses, the induction of softness, to alter toughness, ductility, or thing such as magnetic, electric, as well as other mechanical and physical properties.

In addition, annealing is used for the production of a definite microstructure, as well as for changing the crystalline structure. Annealing also includes sub-critical annealing. Sub-Critical Annealing tends to refer to the process of heating and cooling used on metals within a solid state. In general, it refers to the change that takes place within the microstructure that causes the metal to soften.

Quenching and Tempering is the process where the crystalline material is heated to the proper austenitizing temperature for a time where it can meet the desired change. Quenching will follow after this happens and will use such materials like oil, water, and air. However, the way that you quench the metal will depend on its chemical composition. After quenching, the metal will be then reheated until it hits a certain temperature mark that is under the critical range before it is tempered again.

Precipitation, case, and selective hardening, are all heat treatments that depend on the material that is being treated. You will use precipitation hardening with metals that are classified as metals fitting into the precipitation category. Selective hardening will use a few different heat treatments on one object, which is known as differential hardening. Furthermore, case hardening will refer to the diffusion of a surface on monolithic metals so that its resist
