Having A Marketing Mindset Can Help Your Ongoing Marketing Efforts

Having A Marketing Mindset Can Help Your Ongoing Marketing Efforts

It's surprising to hear people say they've tried marketing their book or

business for two or three months and nothing happened so they stopped marketing.

Whatever business you're in, you should understand that marketing is an ongoing process. Whether your book is selling like hot cakes or no one's buying or whether you have a long list of clients or no clients yet, marketing is a constant part of your strategy.

(And this includes marketing by any other name, such as promotion, outreach, connecting, networking.)

It's true that, depending on the business cycle phrase you're in at the moment and your own personal circumstances, the amount of time you spend on marketing at any one period in your life fluctuates.

And especially because of this reality we need to cultivate the mindset of always thinking from a marketing point of view.

Let's consider an imaginary scenario:

You are at your husband's company's annual picnic. You're not pleased because you'd rather be at home working on your own business. And your mind is really not focused on having chit-chat conversations about the weather or the mosquitoes.

Then switch your mind. Look at the people around you as people who might have businesses that could connect with yours either as clients or potential joint venture partners.

Now this doesn't mean you should go up to a person - we'll call her Sally - and immediately start pitching how you and she could work together. But you could go up to Sally, whose business you know, and ask her what successes and problems she's been having recently.

As Sally talks (we all love to talk about ourselves), consider how you might be able to help her. And then offer to help her.

Yes, this is marketing. This is developing future business relationships. And future business relationships can lead to selling more books or getting more clients.

Whenever you're somewhere new, look at the people around you and see if there's someone who down the road might need your product or service. Again, you don't want to "attack" this person.

But if given a choice who to talk to in a group setting of new people, it would be wise to choose the persons who are most likely to be interested in what you have to offer.

Thus, because marketing is an ongoing process, have a marketing mindset wherever you find yourself. You might be surprised how much you can achieve.
