Halloween is a fun time for kids. They look forward to it for weeks, even months! They spend time planning their costume, deciding where to go trick or treating, and even what kind of candy they want the most. Yes, Halloween is a fun time for kids, but it can be a dangerous time as well. Masks impair vision, long costumes create a tripping hazard, and preoccupation with the candy haul makes kids less aware of their surroundings. We all want our kids to be safe on Halloween, so here are a few tips to promote safety.
Trick or Treat Before Dark
Sure, it is spookier to go out after dark but for safety stick to daylight hours. Light provides safety from many things that could harm kids. Cracks in the sidewalks and divots in lawns can cause falls and even broken bones, going out in the daylight will help you see hazards such as this before you hit them. Kids in dark costumes are hard for drivers to spot until they are right upon them. Daylight hours allow kids to be spotted by drivers.
Carry a Light
If you need to go out later, make sure everyone has some type of light. You can give your kids a standard flashlight, or you can get a specialty light. At Halloween you can find all sorts of lights for trick or treaters. There are character flashlights, glow sticks, lanterns, and more. A light will allow your kids to see where they are going and let other people see them coming!
Stay Out of The Road
Many times kids, especially teens, tend to stray toward walking in the road instead of on the sidewalk. This is a hazard after dark any time of year, but on Halloween you have a lot more traffic driving through neighborhoods carrying trick or treaters. Stick to the sidewalk and be safe!
Check The Treat Bag!
We have all heard about someone who got treats on Halloween that had been tampered with. While this is a rare thing, it does happen and parents can never be too careful. Check your kid's treats carefully and throw out anything suspicious. Unwrapped candy should always be thrown away and use caution with homemade treats. Unless you specifically know the person who made it, don't take a chance. Although it may not contain harmful substances but it may carry food borne bacteria.
Set a Curfew
Halloween is generally a fun and safe day. However, trouble does seem to happen when the hour gets late. Make sure your teenagers are home early so they don't get mixed up in any Halloween pranks or tricks. Perhaps plan a teen party at your house so the kids can still have fun, but they will be in a safe environment.
You can have a great and safe Halloween by taking a few simple precautions. Make great memories on this crazy holiday by staying safe!
