Every year on October 31st, Halloween is celebrated by both the young and the old
. If you were to ask ten different people why they celebrate Halloween, you'd probably get several different answers. Young children would probably admit to celebrating for the chance to dress up in colorful costumes and beg for candy. For older people, Halloween gives an excuse to throw parties, and escape from everyday life.Of course, the thing that comes to mind when you think of Halloween is little children going door to door as trick-or-treaters. This is perhaps the main incentive children have for celebrating the holiday because they receive sugary sweets as instant gratification. Children also enjoy picking out a costume and playing pretend. They can actually become Spiderman, a princess, a clown, a witch, or a fairy.
Adults also like to play pretend, and they celebrate Halloween for escapism. Throughout the year, grownups must play the role of being responsible and performing certain societal roles such as paying bills and raising children. For them, Halloween provides escape from their everyday routine. The idea of being someone else for a day is exciting.
Men can indulge their comic book fetishes and folklore obsessions by dressing as super heroes and legendary icons. Women may wear short skirts and pretend to be temptresses and witches, without the guilt or shame of dressing that way. Others celebrate by pretending to be witches and warlocks. This serves as a type of wish fulfillment because it is unacceptable in most societies to practice witchcraft and sorcery.
Some people celebrate Halloween for the terror of it. They pay admission to walk through haunted houses. They are thrilled by scary shrieks, frightening music, and the mysterious atmosphere. Atmosphere is another reason people enjoy the holiday. Many families, businesses, and schools decorate for Halloween.
They hang scary homemade skeletons and make crafts in the traditional orange and black colors. They carve into jack-o-lanterns. During fall festivals, towns and cities often have pumpkin carving competitions. Halloween, like New Year's Eve and birthdays, is also an excuse to throw a big bash.
Folks invite friends and serve refreshments. They enjoy viewing everyone's costume, have a good laugh, and play traditional Halloween games like apple-bobbing. It is also a time for telling scary stories and those brave souls who enjoy ghost stories and horror movies are indulged in this type of activity by the media. Television stations show scary movie marathons and many frightening films are released during this time of the year.
Others have scary movie marathons in their homes, in which they invite their circle of friends, watch a flick or two, and serve refreshments. Some religious people do not celebrate Halloween because they feel it is a pagan holiday. However, some who do celebrate the holiday also describe themselves as affiliated with some religion. To them, it's just a fun and silly holiday.
