Gynecomastia: A Common Condition In Teenage Males

While most women are dealing with breast growth as teens

, some men also go through the same issue. Gynecomastia is a condition in which the tissue in a male's chest starts to grow, much like breasts. Fortunately, it is typically only temporary.

This issue occurs due to hormones, which are responsible for nearly every change around ages 12 to 14. Due to this fact, the condition usually goes away at the end of puberty, if not sooner, lasting only a few months to a year in most cases. Though it can't necessarily be avoided, it is said that marijuana use and extra weight could both add to the risk of gynecomastia. In very few cases, a tumor could also be to blame.

It should go away by itself, so it does not usually need to be treated by a doctor. If it is still present at the end of puberty, such as around age 18, it can be surgically removed. Though it is rarely talked about, gynecomastia occurs in more than one third of teenage males, which means it is more common than many people think.

Though this condition feels like a lump under the nipple, it is not associated with breast cancer. However, since males can indeed get breast cancer, it is wise to go to the doctor if you do feel a lump in the chest area, just in case. If it is gynecomastia, there are ways to make it less noticeable while waiting for it go away on its own.

You can wear a few layers of clothes when you go out, which is often the popular style anyway. Wearing a t-shirt or tank top under a regular shirt is quite normal, so no one will know that you are disguising a lump.

Additionally, some males with this issue are overweight, and though that might not be the initial cause of it, losing weight is a good thing anyway. If you are not overweight, lifting weights can help develop the muscles in the chest, which can both help disguise the lump and help you get in better shape.

While in most cases you can't do much to stop gynecomastia, rest assured that you don't have to live with it forever. Since it should go away within a few months to a year, you may consider surgery once it has stuck around for two years, or you are at the end of puberty. Meanwhile, while there is nothing to be ashamed of, there are many ways of hiding it until it goes away, which many males feel comfortable doing simply so they do not have to explain the condition to others.
