Guide to Peru Eco-Travel

Peru has beautiful scenery, a rich history, fascinating cultures, and an abundance of wildlife. Peru is arguably the most topographically varied of all South American countries. The inland jungle and the desert coastline are divided by breathtaking Andean peaks. It is important to protect these stunning wild landscapes while exploring them on a Peru vacation.

Machu Picchu

Located high in the Andean peaks, amid cloud forests, Machu Picchu remains an archeological mystery and a popular vacation destination. This beautiful Incan citadel was built in a nearly impossible location, which protected it from the Spanish conquest. However, the ancient ruins must also be protected from people who threaten to destroy its beautiful surrounding landscapes. Peru authorities have done well to enforce strict regulations on travel to Peru. Only 1,500 visitors are allowed to the magnificent site each day, and only 500 on the Inca trail per day.Guide to Peru Eco-Travel

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is the world's largest river basin and the source of one-fifth of all free-flowing fresh water on Earth. The Amazon is not only the largest and most luxuriant river, it is also home to one in ten known species in the world. Scientific research has found a palpable link between the health of the Amazon and the integrity of the global environment. Still, rapid deforestation and illegal logging threatens the Amazon. The true biological richness of the Amazon rainforest has not yet even been fully tapped, as scientists are discovering new uses and medicines from the forest all the time. The Amazon rainforest is expected to continue declining unless new regulations are put in place to stop it. This looming disaster for the region's plants and animals should not prevent travelers from seeking its splendor. Rather, travelers should practice ecotourism to see the glory of the rainforest and educate others back home about its fragile state.

Colca Canyon

One of deepest canyon's in the world, the Colca Caynon lies near the picturesque colonial town of Arequipa. These two action packed areas draw numerous visitors, and almost all of them fall in love with the beauty of the place. The affects of all of this tourism can be negative, but travelers can become part of the solution if they are aware of their environmental surroundings and promoting the local economy and empowering local communities. While on a Colca Canyon tour, during which you'll see huge condors soaring over the valley, keep in mind you want to protect the wildlife you admire and the traditional communities in which you stay.
