What are your rights when you buy online? Its a subject that probably should be
covered more and made clear to the consumer; after all, shopping online is still a relatively new phenomenon and one that has hit high street sales hard.Chances are that if you own a computer, are connected to the internet and are familiar with how to use it, that youve bought or looked to buy items online. The first thing to remember is to only buy from a trusted source. Websites from well known high street brands such as Whirlpool or Smeg in the home appliances market, are a pretty safe bet and they have safeguarding in place such as asking you to sign up for an account before you can purchase anything and putting security questions in place when it comes to entering sensitive information such as bank details and credit card numbers. The reputable online auction sites do the same thing and offer secure payment methods which require you to validate new accounts, login details and purchasing information via the email address you provide, but its particularly important to read any small print very carefully on these sites.
If youve never heard of a brand or website before, it doesnt mean you should dismiss it outright, just do your research. Start by asking around your group of friends and if no-ones heard of them, there are plenty of online forums that alert people to websites that are in any way untrustworthy. You can normally get a pretty good feel for a bad website once you start digging.
Once you have decided to buy from a particular website, make sure that you are only providing basic information. Any websites that ask you for anything more than this, such as your mothers maiden name or PIN number are not to be trusted. You will often be asked for your card details, security number (the last three digits on the signature strip of your card), billing address and delivery address if different. Anything more than this and alarm bells should be ringing.
Lets say youre looking to buy an appliance online, a washing machine or dishwasher for example, your rights are the same as if youre buying from the high street; that is, if the item is faulty or has been poorly described. For example, if you believe you are buying a Bosch washing machine or a Zanussi dishwasher and what actually arrives is an economy brand youve never heard of, you have the right to a full refund. The same applies to an item that is not in fully working order when you receive it. In addition to these statutory consumer rights, when buying online you have the right to whats known as a cooling off period of seven days.
