Green London

Famously named, The Big Smoke, London doesn't have the reputation for being a green and nature-friendly city. Its skyscraper buildings, busy roads and large population doesn't leave much room for greenery but if you know where to look there are plenty of treasures for nature lovers to be found in and around the centre of the city.

If you're heading to London for a weekend away there is the temptation to spend your time slap bang in the centre visiting some of the world's best museums, galleries and attractions, but a quick scan through the guide books will offer up some more tranquil spaces in which to spend your time. There are eight designated areas where you can experience some of London's best green space.

St James Park is situated slap bang in the centre and offer visitors 58 acres of land with a lake in its centre, teaming with wildlife, including geese, ducks and pelicans. If you're lucky you might just catch a parade or celebration as this park is annually used as the setting for many historical and celebratory events. Similarly Green Park is right in the centre of the city but offers visitors a very different experience with plenty of trees and grasslands to explore. The famous Hyde Park is a much bigger space and houses plenty of activities to entertain most people. This park boasts more than 4000 trees and regularly makes use of its lake for boating and its beautiful surroundings for horse riding. These parks are conveniently situated beside some of London's famous landmarks so you won't miss out on the classic holiday photo opportunities. Green London

If you don't mind travelling a little further out of the city both Richmond Park and Bushy Park are perfect for a day out in the countryside. Richmond Park is home to hundreds of deer and is a designated national nature reserve so if animals are your thing then you should be right at home in this beautiful space. If you're looking for a little more from your day out then Bushy Park is definitely worth a visit. This park is home to the famous Diana Memorial Fountain, which is perfect for kids to splash around in on a hot day, and there is popular welcome centre where you can find out more about the parks history as well as getting a quick bite to eat.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in London but you don't want to be sandwiched between an office block and a busy road there are plenty of London hotels that surround the parks and offer up lovely views and a great atmosphere that will transport you into the middle of the countryside.

Wherever you decide to go too experience some of London's green spaces you are guaranteed to have a great day out, from lazing around in Green Park to dining out for lunch in Bushy Park, London has much more to offer its visitors than just its exciting city life.
