What happened to the four wheel drive carry all was that it rocked down the rotted

jungle track and emerged into the bright coastal sunlight as it burst out of the cool and dark forest. What we faced was another one in the Great Barrier Reef just 10 miles offshore after we left the Daintree rain forest which was one of the great natural wonders of the world. Northern Queensland, one of the least developed regions along Australia's tropical northeast coast, is the only place where two wonders are located side by side.

Inland is where you will find one of the oldest rain forests in the world. The reef that stretches north and south along 1,250 miles of shore swings closest to land in this part of the northern coast. The rainforest and reef provide easy visitor access. If you wish to see 1,200 species of tropical reef fish or the 350 types of spectacularly colorful living coral that make up the reef then you should consider watching from an underwater observatory, from a glass sided submersible craft, or by diving.

For the jumping off point, it was in Cairns which has the charm of a British colonial outpost, a small tropical city of 85,000 serving as the gateway to Australia's Marlin Coast. Twisting 21 miles up and through mountains, gorges, and rain forests to the village of Kuranda was the 100 year old Cairns Kuranda Railway that we rode during our out of town trip. We returned to Cairns by train and set off the next morning by car on a 90 minute drive that took us north along the Marlin Coast and inland toward the rain forest.

13 of the 19 families of ancient plant life still found on Earth are contained in the nearby rain forest. There are some which date back to 130 million years. Use four wheel drive vehicles to pass through the old rutted dirt tracks in the forest that were built for logging. A more leisurely look at the rain forest is possible through pull offs, one that opens on to an hour's easy stroll along a well marked trail.

One tour service offers environmentally sensitive into the rain forest which comes with a boat ride down the Daintree River and starts from Silky Oaks. We drove a short drive from Silky Oaks to one of the major gateways to the Great Barrier Reef which is the old gold rush village of Port Douglas. There were chartered boats for scuba divers, there were sailboats used by skimmers, and for groups of people who preferred to view the reef atop permanent platforms there was a fleet of twin hulled jet catamarans.

The beauty of the coral reef and its multicolored fish can be seen without getting wet as gliding alongside the coral are two glass-sided semi submersibles that can be hired for 30 minute trips. When you go snorkeling, trained marine biologists will guide you. There are private grottoes, one behind a waterfall, near the swimming pool and local frequented the open air coffee shop in the local hotel where we stayed. The famous Four Mile Beach is located outside downtown Port Douglas and it is where you will see beautiful stretches of palm fringed white sand curving along the ocean.

Serving as a jump off point away from sea is Port Douglas and it is where you can view the northern Queensland environment in a different way. It was during the past century when a tableland high above the coast became a prime cattle raising area and you will still see some of the original homesteads on the old cattle ranches today. Wetherby is one of them and it is the site of a 1870s homestead and still a working cattle station. As a result of the family proprietors opening it to tourists, the real Australia can be seen.
