A perfect candidate for GPS units is someone who travels to many unfamiliar places (at least five times yearly) and needs to find ways to get to a certain location. A frequent traveler needs a GPS device that is handy and provides accurate navigation. The batteries should have longer lives.

3.Know the basics

a. Screen size, on board maps and POIs

This is an important factor in choosing the correct GPS device. The current appealing mark for the displays is 4.3 inches and most of the models out on the market have this. But if reading small texts is a problem, then a larger screen is better. The problem with large screens is that it will use up a lot of space on the dashboard.

Practically almost all of the GPS navigation units have the map of the United States preloaded in them. Some include Canada and Mexico. If there is a need for extra maps, this can be bought from the manufacturers. Just be sure to keep the maps updated.

Every GPS also contains POI (points of interests) databases together with the maps. The size of the database varies among different units. Get hands on reviews to know which one is the best.

b. Voice Control and other extras

Most of the newer models have incorporated hands-free devices to prevent road accidents. Some even have text-to-speech included (a talking GPS).
