Government Legislates For Happier Children

Government Legislates For Happier Children

Something that seems very important to Nick Clegg

, the Deputy Prime Minister, is the well being of children and families. Nick Clegg states that there should be plans to make the U.K. a better place for children, stating that too many childhoods are a time of 'stress, anxiety and insecurity'

A taskforce has been set up by the government, which is focused at shared parenting, flexible working, and advertising aimed at children and safe play areas for children.

Nick Clegg claimed that the country must 'rediscover the spirit of childhood' and let children 'flourish'.

This statement is a reflection of the 2007 Unicef report which suggested that the United Kingdom was the least attractive country in the industrialised world in which to raise a child. This report cites levels of deprivation and the lack of time parents spent with their children as key problems. Further problems that were addressed, were the teenagers' exposure to smoking, drinking and underage sex.

Mr Clegg further remarked that the governments of the past had let children down and that 'we have built a Britain not fit for our children to grow up in'.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, stated that a 'small number' of proposals by the end of year.

Mr Clegg said that the government was committed to cracking down on 'irresponsible' advertising aimed at children 'to restore and protect the innocence of childhood'.

" I want us, as a country, to rediscover the spirit of childhood so we can give every child the best chance to flourish. But we are realistic. It is not government's job to create happy families"

Our job is to dismantle the barriers that prevent families from giving children the best start. Where Labour nannied you, we will empower you".

What does this mean?

How do we actually legislate for happy families and stress-free childhoods?

Some obvious areas of legislation are in the area of advertising and the flexible working hours legislation that is in place.

Further to this the government claims that means tested benefits for children will not be introduced, further begging the question how can you legislate for happy families and stree-free childhoods?
