It can develop in any part of a human body. Different types of cancer have different traits and attributes. In fact, the protein which is found on the exteriors of cancer cells also vary. Colloidal gold, shaped like rods, is conjugated with specialized antibodies to latch onto the protein markers for breast cancer and some other types of cancer. These gold rods extricate proteins into blood and a sample is taken out for further examination and studies. The combination of protein-nanorod exhibits light in a unique way. The scatter of unique light patterns allows further diagnosis of the problem.

As per BBC News, the gold particles are subject to greater experimentation because they are suitable to detect other types of toxins and pathogens as well.

Cost Saving Method

Use of Gold Nanoparticles applications in cancer diagnosis significantly cut down the expense. It reduces the diagnosis cost by two-third as compared to other similar cancer diagnosis methods. The reason behind their cost effectiveness is that Nanorods use blood samples to detect the cancer cells rather than going for a biopsy. As it's well known fact that the biopsy consumes a good amount of money, whereas the similar and faster results can be drawn from using nanorods. A part of the cost is saved by using the conventional microscope to study the combination of nanorod-proteins.

In a recent development, a different study, conducted by Dr. Irudayaraj, reveals that gold nanorods can even go one step ahead as these rods have the potential to detect the cancer stem cells. The discovery is a breakthrough because the cancer stem cells are the cells that get multiplied exponentially and turns into malignant tumors.
