Of course, if you've been using Adsense for sometime, you probably know that earnings do tend to go up and down but if it's been going on for a while, the decrease is probably worrying you, especially since it seems to be on a constant journey down a slope. So what gives? Is this something you should be nervous about or is this just one of those times of the year when the national economy is pulling at everything else including your Adsense earnings?Before you blame Google for the dismal showing of your Adsense ads, there are certain things you might want to consider first. Here are some factors you might want to look into:
How small was the drop?
A $10 to $50 drop a day may not be that big. Earnings from Google Adsense are far from being constant. In fact, if you checked your earnings history, you'll find that no two days earned you the exact amount of money. So if the decrease in your earnings has very little difference, there's probably no need to worry too much.
Are you losing traffic?
If the decrease in your Adsense earnings is sustained, there's probably a need for you to take a good look at your traffic. If your Adsense earnings rely on pay-per-click ads, for example, a drop in the number of visitors will eventually affect the number of clicks your ads receive. One site owner, for example, reported a difference of more than $10,000 within a month for losing 80% of his traffic.
Exposure is key in the internet and so is interest. If traffic is the cause of the decrease in your Adsense earnings, it's probably time to rethink your strategy and seriously think about some changes in your site.
Does your page load quickly?
This may seem like an insignificant matter but a slow loading page can annoy your visitors. If they experience this once, they'll probably come back but if a slow loading web page is the norm for your site, your visitors (no matter how loyal they are) won't be there for the long haul. Check to see if your website does load quickly. If it doesnt, fix it immediately.
Is your traffic affected by bad links?
Bad links thrive on bad choices. Take a look at all the links you have and see which ones are unrelated to your niche. Review your site and choose only links that will contribute to your earnings and not diminish. Unrelated links will do nothing for you and only clog up your site.
Do you have enough traffic to actually detect a decrease?
Real trends in your Adsense income can only be calculated if you have the appropriate size. You should have hundreds of clicks on a regular basis in order to legitimately claim any decreases in your income.
Is the season to blame?
Yep, there is such thing as a summer slump. Some seasons are just naturally better than others in terms of income. Post-Christmas season, for example, often show terrible numbers. If you've never looked at this trend before, it's about time you saw how different holidays and events contribute to the increase (and decrease) in your Adsense earnings.
Do you have underperforming ads?
Underperforming ads bring down your earnings, especially if you're dealing with advertisers with bad sites. Check the sites you're linked to and find out how they fare. If they arent too attractive or are producing bad products, you can be sure repeat business is impossible. This can also affect your site's credibility. Try to clean up your ads and remove those which underperform. Off-target ads may also be the culprit. Try to see if section targeting will work.
Do visitors click on more pages before going to an ad?
If visitors only clicked on 2 or 3 pages before clicking on an ad, that's fine. But if it takes about 5 or 6 pages before the ad clicking happens, this can lower your eCPM.
Is it a short term decrease in Adsense earnings?
If it's a short term decline and you're noticing an improvement, relax. It'll take a while for the positive changes to occur. However, if it's a long term decrease, it could be caused by low bidding rates, which is always bad for internet business. Shifts in supply and demand can sometimes turn against publishers. If this is the case, there isnt much you can do about it. When it comes to smartpricing, no publisher has yet found a way to go over this steep hill. In the meantime, take care of your site and continue producing great content.
