Go On, Pay the Guy!

Go On, Pay the Guy!

Go On, Pay the Guy!

Briefly, this is about a homeowner being victimized by a contractor who had no good intents from the very beginning. Reportedly, the person who was directly victimized shared very extensive conversation and a few drinks with the fellow previous to his beginning the project.

In the process, the victim trusted the contractor, fully, to write out the terms of the contract. These included the installation of a specific make and model of furnace......and AC. A typical HVAC deal. The contractor agreed to make the actual purchases and installations, requiring $4,200.00 up front.

However, the homeowner declined to release the entire $4,400.00 at once; but, when the contractor insisted, the victim relented, offering only half that amount up front. Yet, the contractor claimed that he needed at least $ 3,000.00 to get started. The poor, off balance customer relented, again...granting the $3,000.00 advance.Go On, Pay the Guy!

Guess what? No sooner than he and the contractor signed the contract and the check was written, the contractor promised to begin on the project........a week later. Promising the work would take only a couple days.

Two weeks passed, instead. Finally, the contractor sent four guys over for the project.

Bottom line: hardly anything about the deal was fulfilled. The work was very shoddy. The guys hardly did any work. By the owner's description, it would seem that four kids recruited out of 1st Grade could have put these guys to shame!

To top it off, the contractor demanded to be paid the balance on the project. He even threatened legal action, made other empty promises, even hanging up on the owner. He accused the victim of having a negative attitude, then refused to call him back.

When the poor guy initiated the call to the contractor about a week later, the contractor remained adamant about getting the balance for the job, plus a few hundred dollars more for other work (change order)before he came back to have the job done correctly.

Don't know what happened in the end. Did the homeowner pay the contractor the rest? Did the contractor complete the job correctly? One thing for sure: there are a lot of inconclusive episodes similar or worse. This is a reason for HGRB Services and similar consumer-oriented agencies. Instead of our clients whining about injustices without remedy, they do a lot less of that.....and a lot more pursuing and clinching of effective counter-action. Awesome!
