Kids grow up fast, this is true. One minute they are infants, relying on those around them to take care of them in every way. The next minute they are old enough to walk home by themselves or get themselves ready for school in the morning. And as they get older, they are going to start growing out of their old toys. New board games are always a great bet, because board games run the gamut from perfect for the very young to great for adults. At this age, they are probably going to want to play a game that they can play and compete against adults in fairly. Many board games that require a bit more thinking and strategy are marked for ages 8 and up. The more difficult ones may be 12 and up, which is a great way to keep your pre-teens busy without making them feel like you look at them as "just a kid".
Another great choice in puzzles. Bigger puzzles, consisting of 200+ pieces, are going to be a real challenge but a fun group effort. If you get the whole family involved, it can be something that is done over a period of time that you can always return to and share in. And it'll get their brains going, really working out shapes and visuals in a way that they couldn't when they were younger.
At this age, kids love more creative pursuits like drawing, coloring, designing their own signs or even stenciling t-shirts. They make great gifts for children in general but when they are older, they can handle paints and other items that would otherwise be too messy and too much for a younger child. And you might be amazed at the hidden talent they have.
Starter musical instruments are also great for this age, from guitars to keyboards. Getting them one to play with on their own time is a good way to start. See if they develop enough of an interest to invest in lessons. Kids who start young in music often excel quickly.
