Getting a Good Dental Referral and Finding a Dentist

For many people, going to the dentist tops their list of least favorite things to do

. Many folks are even afraid of the dentist. With that said, many dentists employ a variety of techniques that ease anxiety in their patients and make a visit to the dentist a little less stressful. The question is how do you find a dentist who will cater to your own special needs, whether you have dental anxiety or you want a dentist who is fast and efficient. You can find the right dentist for you by using these search tips and evaluation aids.

Get Recommendations

Ask friends, family and coworkers (especially if they have the same insurance plan as you) who they use as a dentist. Ask if they are pleased with the service. People you know can give the best dental referral, mainly because if they have a problem with the dentist or don't really like him or her they will be honest and tell you. You can also ask your Doctor to give you the names of dentists in your area.

Check Dental Directories

Check with you state or local dental societies. They will have a directory of dentists that are near you. The American Dental Association (ADA) also offers a directory so that patients can easily find a dentist in their area. If you have dental insurance, you can consult the provider directory. That way, you can ensure that the dentist you select will accept your insurance. Dental referral directories are also available on the internet. You can choose your location and other details, then find a dentist.

Once you have located a few dentists that seem like a good fit, you need to evaluate them to find just the right one.

Does the Appointment Schedule fit your Schedule?

Some dentists have appointments early in the morning or late in the evening while others only schedule appointments during business hours. Does the dentist that you select offer appointment times that are convenient for you?

Is the Office Location Convenient for You?

A good dental referral system will be able to narrow your search within parameters that you set. If you want a dentist within five miles of your home, it will locate all the dentists within that radius. Still, even if an office falls within a certain mile radius, it can still be difficult to get to if the street it is on is particularly busy or is not easily accessible.

Is the Office Staff/Atmosphere a Good Fit for You?

When finding a dentist, good dental care is only part of battle. Sure, you want a good dentist, good location and decent fees, but if you just can't deal with the office staff, you probably won't stick with that dentist. Talk with the office staff. Are they friendly? Are they helpful? In all reality, you will be dealing more with the office staff then with the dentist because they will do the scheduling and help you with any problems, including connecting you with the dentist when you need to talk directly to him or her.

Are the Fees within your Budget?

You can't put a price on good dental care, but, let's face it, there are just some things that are outside of your price range. Different dentists have different fees. Some have discount programs, some work with insurance and some offer sliding scale fees. You need to find a dentist who has fees you can afford.

Are they a Provider for your Insurance?

This may seem like a no-brainer question, but you want to make sure that your dental care provider accepts your insurance. You can check with your insurance company or you can call the dentist's office directly and ask them if they accept your insurance. Some insurance policies will allow you to go outside of the provider system but you have to pay a higher rate. It is a good idea to thoroughly review your policy to find out all of your options.

Does the Dentist's Personality allow you to Build a Rapport?

A positive dental referral, lots of satisfied customers and a great office staff mean nothing if your dentist's personality grates on your nerves. You want to have a good rapport with your dentist so finding one who has a personality that works well with you is a priority. When choosing your dental care provider, find out about rates, insurance and scheduling, but also check out your dentist's personality. After all, you are starting a relationship and you want to feel comfortable discussing a variety of issues with him or her. It helps if you actually like him or her!

Finding a good dentist does not have to be difficult. These tips should help you find just the right dentist. You'll be in that dentist's chair in no time!
