Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled - Dentists Disagree

Lots of people talk about getting wisdom teeth pulled

. In some cases, there is a real immediate need for dental action. The question remains though whether or not this is a necessary procedure for most people. Dentists don't all agree about the answer.

There may be clear reasons to opt for extraction. One obvious reason is if the last molars cause serious problems for a patient. At the very least, the last units on your gums could erupt misaligned and crowd your other permanent pearly whites. This crowded situation could cause some gradual pushing and shoving that can lead to a more general misalignment of an entire row.

Misalignment is not the most pressing reason to have wisdom teeth removed. The molars can also become impacted. This means they may not fully erupt from the gums or they may only partially come out. This condition in addition to misalignment and the position of the molars themselves can lead to far more serious complications. Bacteria could breed and lead to the development of cavities. Infections as well as fluid filled cysts might also develop.

The last molars don't immediately cause trouble. In a lot of people, they just sit around for a long time before problems start to occur. Of course, there are also individuals who don't develop dental issues at all. This has led some people to think that having wisdom teeth pulled is not a necessity for all. If they aren't causing trouble, then perhaps they should be left alone. This does seem to make sense.

There is no official general guideline for addressing these molars. Some experts believe though that it is best to have them taken out even when they don't cause problems. This is because they may eventually lead to complications that will be difficult to treat once they develop. Also, it is considerably harder to extract molars in older people than in young individuals. Hence, some dentists may advice prompt removal.

Be mindful. Extraction is a generally smooth process. Just like any other medical step however, getting wisdom teeth pulled can have risks and complications. The molars can be so misaligned that a dentist could accidentally injure surrounding tissues and nerves while extracting. This can cause lasting pain not just in the gum area but in various facial regions as well. Also, infections can develop out of a badly executed procedure.

So, should you have yours taken out? The answer depends a lot on what your dentist believes. You may want to check the opinions of several experts before making a final decision. You can also alternatively just follow the recommendation of your dentist as long as you are certain that he is a highly qualified and reputable practitioner. Make sure your dentist has had a lot of experience with molar problems.

You may or may not need to consider getting wisdom teeth pulled. You'll only know for certain if you have it evaluated. One thing is for sure though, even if your molars seem to be okay, you should pay attention to them. You might just be one of the many who could already be on the verge of experiencing complications.
