It seems to me a lot of people are getting married for the wrong reasons. I suppose things haven't changed since I was a young man newly married to my high school sweetheart. Back then I was serving in the armed forces and some of my buddies would get married to ease their loneliness. Being far from home can cause a man to crave companionship, regardless of whether he or she is a good match or not. Not much has changed over the years. I still see people getting married for the wrong reasons. I'm offering some advice any engaged couple should seriously consider.
First, you should date for a year and a half to two years. This is an ideal time to get to know each other. I know women who have been with the same guy for six, eight, ten or more years. That is just pathetic. Ladies, if you are waiting this long for a marriage proposal, and wedding ring, you probably won't get one. Don't commit yourself to a relationship this long without getting what you truly want.
Next, make sure you have the same religious beliefs. This sounds obvious but there are couples who hook up who disregard the other's beliefs, or they think being in love will prevent religion from being an issue.
Children- How soon and how many. One of you may want children as soon as possible. The other may want to wait a few years for a promotion or for a large savings account to develop, or something else. Three months after your wedding is not the right time to have this discussion for the first time. Someone, (usually the wife) is going to be ticked off.
The biggest cause of divorce is money fights and money problems. I suggest you both get out of debt before you get married. It is better to take care of your money issues individually before you walk down the aisle. From then onward, you should handle money issues together. There should be no "my money" or "his money". Make sure you have joint accounts. This will help to keep you both united and aware of what is going on with the money.
Basically, love is merely a prerequisite for marriage, but other thing are needed to make it more likely to succeed. Don't believe for a minute you and your finance are too in love to need marriage counseling. Look at the pitiful divorce rate in our culture. Go to see a marriage counselor prior to taking your vows. It doesn't suggest you may be wrong for each other. It does however increase your odds of having an awesome successful marriage.
