The student should walk out with the minimum of a two year degree, although a four year is preferred. The licensing examination is overseen by the American Dental Association and involves both a written and clinical test. The only state that doesn't do this is the state of Alabama, which has its own licensing examination.
Even though the work is basically a freelance job, the take home pay is quite good. According to the Bureau, the average dental hygienist makes over $65,000 a year. The harder working ones can near $100,000. As this is a freelance position, the hygienist is usually on his/her own when it comes to such things as health insurance and other benefits. On the other hand, there are those who get full time work at a major hospital or other health institute, which will include benefits as part of their package.
Working hours are usually set by the dentist's office. This can work in a single mom's favor as different offices have different hours. With a little homework they can find one that still allows them the time to take care of their families.
