Gamma Cameras May Be Better At Detecting Breast Cancer
Breast cancer has been a disease that has been fought for a long time
. It is a nasty disease that many women have feared. Though breast cancer can be deadly, we have made many strides in the battle against breast cancer and it is not a sure sentence to death anymore. In fact, with early detection it can often be cut off at the pass and cured with the woman surviving the ordeal.
One of the ways that we have battled breast cancer is to find it early before it can become too big to handle. For years, there were only two options in regards to having the breast scanned. One of the ways this is done is through a machine called a mammography. The other way is through an MRI machine. The MRI is expensive and so was not chosen by most women and doctors. However, the other option, the mammography machine was uncomfortable for women because an uncomfortable amount of pressure is needed on the breast to take the picture.
Now, there are studies that are showing that using a gamma camera to take a picture of the internal mass of the breast is a viable, better option to the mammography. It works, as far as the patient is concerned, much like an MRI machine, so the comfort level can go way up.
The real benefit if using a gamma camera to look for breast cancer is that it can detect cancer in a much smaller form than the mammography can. This is huge in the battle against breast cancer because the sooner you can detect, and at the smallest size possible, the easier it is to eradicate the cancer from the woman.
The reason that the gamma camera is a viable option is because of the costs. Unlike the MRI, which is even better at detecting breast cancer than a gamma camera, the gamma camera is a lot less expensive than an getting an MRI and only slightly more expensive than the mammography that has been used for years.
The fight against all cancers continues to rage. Many people suffer and die from cancer all of the time and it is a hard thing for everyone involved. There is more than the patient that cancer affects. The family of the patient, the friends of the patient, the coworkers of the patient, the doctors and the nurses of the patient are all affected when someone is found to have cancer in their body. It is a disease that we are all fighting in one way or another.
