Keep it Short: You may have the greatest experience and the most wonderful educational background that a potential employer could hope for, but if your resume is too long no one will ever know. The general rule of thumb is that a resume should be kept to one page, two at absolute maximum.
What most people do not realize is that the average resume is read for less than 10 seconds before either being tossed or passed up the chain to the next reader. This is why the one page rule is so important. If that great volunteering note is buried on page three, it is most-likely never going to be seen.

Do Not Be Afraid of White Space: Most rookie resume writers try to cram as much information onto the page as possible. And at first it makes sense. You have a lot of great credentials and you want to share them If you have realized that you need to keep your resume to one page, then there is a temptation to shrink the margins and font and get as many words onto that one page as you can. But this would be a mistake.
Here is a trick that the pros use. Imagine your resume as a web page. Most quality sites are not filled with text from top to bottom and from side to side. White space allows a reader's eyes to adjust and take in what is there. Use bullet points instead of paragraphs, phrases instead of sentences.
Keep as much white space as you can while still including the choicest pieces of background.

Keep It Simple Stupid: You may be a Microsoft Word wizard, able to manipulate every formatting function Bill Gates and company can think up. Resist the urge to show it all off on your one page resume. K.I.S.S. should be your motto when it comes to crafting a powerful resume.
By all means bold your headings, use a separate font to set off a particular point- just do not overdue it. A little goes a long way. Keep in mind you want this to be a highly scannable document that can be digesting in 10 seconds. Don't make the reader work too hard.
