Food Insurance Saves Time, Money And Lives

The use of food storage is increasing in popularity as there are many more natural disasters occurring all throughout the United States

. Food storage is a good idea for safety and planning reasons to ensure you and your family will be taken care of.

It is a traditional domestic practice and is also important industrially. Many societies and even animals pack away sustenance for many purposes.

One popular use is the preparation for periods of scarcity or famine. Another use is to take advantage of short term surplus of groceries like during harvest seasons so that their supply can last through the off seasons.

This enables a better balanced diet during the rest of the year. For example, during the summer when many fruits are fresh in harvest, people will stock up on those items so that those nutrients and flavors can be enjoyed year round.

Groceries can be stored also in preparation for special events and celebrations by many cultures all over the world. Many religious cultures have their reasons for this practice also.

For example, the LDS Church leaders council church members to store rations in preparation for potential emergencies of catastrophes. Another purpose is for protection against predators or other intruders.

Domestic food storage usually includes grains, meats, fish and shellfish, and many more items. They are stored to prepare for one reason or another.

Grains are stored in containers that are sealed to prevent ingress of moisture or attack of vermin. Usually the containers are metal cans.

Sacks are usually ineffective in holding grains because of mold and pest destruction. Those two detriments can destroy a 25 kg cloth sack or grain in a year even if they are stored in a safe place like off the ground in a dry area.

On the ground or on damp concrete, a sack of grain can be destroyed in as little time as three days, and the grain will have to be dried before it can even be milled if it is not damaged too much. This not only pertains to your personal continence of stored items, but you should not purchase food if it is kept in unsuitable conditions due to risk of spoilage.

A good test of whether or not the grain is still good is to sprout some. If it sprouts appropriately, it is still good; but if it does not, you should not eat or purchase it.

Prepare to wait up to a week for grains to sprout, and remember to throw it out if you are in doubt. However, grain is one of the simpler substances to keep.

Meat, on the other hand, is much more testy and difficult to keep. It can only be held for short amounts of time.

Thus, it is not a good plan to store meat for a year supply of food, but short term supplies can handle the testy subject. There are also many different conditions for storing various kinds of meat with particular characteristics.

Pork needs to be eaten within one day, but beef and venison improve up to five days in storage in a cold environment. There are also many dry aging techniques that are sometimes used to tenderize specialty gourmet meats by hanging them in carefully monitored environments for up to 21 days.

Semi-dried meats such as salamis and country hams are processed with more salt, smoke, sugar, acid or other cures. Then, they are hung and kept in cool dry units for extended periods for up to a year.

Thus, dryer meats with more sodium are more easily kept for longer periods of time. Others can be quite difficult to preserve for very long.

Fish are very difficult and unsafe to store without preservation. They really should be eaten within a few hours of their harvest without extra processing to keep them longer.

Food storage should be rotated according to several guidelines, using and replenishing it continuously. This will eventually become a good habit and will be the most economical and convenient way to live.

After the initial investment in your stock of food, it will become much cheaper to maintain. Instead of going to the store every time you need something and paying full price for it, one option is to buy while things are discounted and keep them in a special room or pantry.

Then, you can replace it next time it is on sale. This is convenient in many ways, and it can also be stored long term in preparation for emergencies.
