Float Your Own Boat
It's likely that most of us think of our lives as more like a rushing river than a gentle stream. And some days that dream seems like a nightmare.
Our boat motor has stalled once again and we are cascading down the rapids completely out of control, smashing into rocks and poking holes in our hulls. We just plug one leak, hit another rock and voila, another gusher pours into our lives.
Who the hell built this boat anyway? The motor is always stalling or quits completely, often backfiring just before it conks out. Take it to the shop mechanic at our church, synagogue, mosque or the Buddhist teacher for warranty and we find out that there was no guarantee, only the promise of a short boat ride and no specifics as to how long the journey might last.
Not only is the motor constantly out of tune, but the hull is a catastrophe--weakly built, constantly in the body shop for repair, getting rusty around the bolts even before the paint has dried. If we load it up with too many supplies it slows down and threatens to sink under its own weight. Starve the engine and its back to the shop.
On the rare occasion that the motor is running properly some still can't seem to keep the boat going straight. Bumping into other boats and the shoreline--maybe someone should do us a favor and take away the licenses of the most reckless boats, put the captains ashore out of the way, and give the other boats more space.
If you are watching the river from shore you probably wonder where on earth did all of these different boats come from and where is the river taking them? They all seem to be headed in the same direction at breakneck speeds. Don't they know that there is a waterfall into a deep abyss ahead? And no one knows for sure how deep the abyss is and where the bottom is--if there even is a bottom.
Why can't we find the original boat builder? He she or it seems to be hiding from us? We look in the usual places, ask the shop mechanics, look into space, ask the universe, ask a shrink and still no sign of the original boat builder. We are told by all, believe--believe who?
The only sign of a possible boat builder is in ancient writings. But we find out that all of these boatbuilding plans were written from word of mouth, by other boat captains from the past, and not by the original boat builder. Good grief.
We know someone or something builds these boats, perhaps if he she or it explained the purpose of the design we might find a reason to calm down a bit and realize that we all really do want to gently float down the stream merrily, merrily, merrily.
But, regardless of the flaws in our boats what were the odds of even having the chance to float our boat anyway, one in millions--billions--for that alone maybe we should be grateful.
Perhaps it would be simpler to just forget about how our boat was set afloat and its flaws, turn the rudder slightly ourselves, drift into calmer waters, slow down and float on the calm steam of life's dream just as the song writer wanted to impress upon us.
