First Time At A London Gym? Here's What You Need To Be Doing

If you're a regular attendee at a London gym

, you might think this is strange, but a lot of people find it intimidating entering a London gym for the first time.

It's not so much the fact it's a gym that's the specific problem, but it's more the fact that you're entering a place full of people who seem to know what they're doing and you appear to have to get on with it by yourself.

If you think about it like that and compare it to being put into the middle of a busy office and expected to start working without any help, it's understandable why some people find it a struggle to take that first step into a London gym.

Should you be just about to start attending a gym in the capital, however, there really isn't anything to be worried or concerned about and all you have to do is take things slowly and surely and you shouldn't be afraid to ask for help along the way.First Time At A London Gym? To start with, assuming that you have just changed into your exercising clothes and you're in the main gym area, you need to stretch. There are likely to be notice boards around the gym that advise on what stretches you should be doing before your exercises and don't worry about just carrying them out in the middle of the gym - as long as you're not blocking anyone, you'll fit right in.

Once you've stretched, you shouldn't jump straight on a machine and start working out - you need to warm up your muscles.

A great exercise for this is walking and the treadmill provides the perfect opportunity to do so.

Standing on a treadmill, don't be alarmed by the masses of buttons on the display panel in front of you. The vast majority of the equipment in the gym is likely to have an 'automatic' or 'quick setup' button, which will allow you get started in a matter of seconds by just following the buttons on the screen.

Once you've walked - or jogged - for around 15 to 20 minutes, it's time to start looking at other exercises. The exercises that you do will depend heavily on what you want to achieve and so your best course of action here is that unless you know specifically what you want to be doing and how you should be doing it, you ask one of the instructors who are likely to be around.

And if for whatever reason there are no instructors available, ask another person who's at the gym exercising - just make sure they've stopped working out first.

After you've finished your exercises, rather than just pack up your stuff and go home, to ensure that you don't ache in the morning, it's advised that you let your muscles cool down slowly, something which you can do by either walking as you did to warm them up or going for a swim, an way to cool down which is particularly popular as it's really refreshing, too.

If it's your first time at a London gym, it doesn't need to be as daunting as you may think. Take your time, don't be afraid to ask for help or advice and enjoy your time there - if you're enjoying it, chances are you're going to want to be going back time and time again.
