Many kits will contain things like medications, hydrogen peroxide for sterilizing cuts and scratches as well as syrup of ipecac for administration in the even of poisoning, stints, Nasopharyangeal airway, etc. It's also important to take notice on which supplies should be used for certain situations - yes, education is a necessary part of a first aid kit or survival kit. For example, if you have something like Syrup of ipecac in the kit, it can help with things like a noxious substance in the system, but in some instances this can also cause nausea and vomiting for extended periods of time - so it's important to keep away from children.
A basic first aid kit should include at least 2 dozen separately sealed adhesive tapes in assorted shapes and sizes, along with various antiseptic gauze pads in case of a serious wound - the larger the pads the better, as they have many potential uses. It's important to have a large role of some type of micro-pore adhesive tape as well, in case a custom adhesive needs to be fashioned to keep a gauze pad in place, and scissors or shears will be needed both for cutting tape and gauze as well as potentially cutting clothing to expose an injured area or to fashion a sling.
Tweezers, a thermometer, and an antibiotic lotion or healing salves of some kind are mainstays of any first aid kit, and calamine lotion should be included particularly for the summer season. If you are going to be in more hazardous situations such as climbing, hiking, camping, white water rafting, etc. you should also consider a survival kit that is going to have the basic PLUS supplies.
