You are finally ready to buy the house on the cul-de-sac that you have been eyeing for a while now .
. imagine it filled with things you lovingly picked out. Imagine the children playing in the family room with the TV blaring in the background. The Mom is baking cookies and the house is filled with the aroma of chocolate chipswhen all at once, you realize that you smell smoke. You look around and realize that the stove top is burning and the fire is raging.
What happens next happens in the blink of the eye. The fire sprinkler system consisting of a hydraulically calculated water supply system which provides adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected, is set off. Because it activates so fast, it helps reduce the heat, the flames and the smoke. Fire systems are not a new invention. They have been around for over a century. Today, in the US, sprinklers are mandatory in all new home construction and commercial buildings.
How does a
sprinkler system . work? Every sprinkler head is enclosed in a heat sensitive bulb. When pressure is applied to a pip cap it acts as a plug that prevents water from flowing until the temperature around the sprinkler reaches the activation temperature. Each sprinkler activates independently when the predetermined heat level is reached. Hence, only those sprinkler heads that are closest to the fire get activated, thus limiting damage due to water.
The most common sprinkler systems are the wet pipes. Since wet pipes are simple with the only operating components being the automatic sprinklers and the automatic alarm check valve, they are reliable. Till the preset temperature is reached, the water in the pipes is not released.
People living in homes with fire sprinklers installed, are at a lower risk (about 80% lower) of dying in the event of a home fire and loss to property is reduced by 71%. The advantage of sprinklers is that it buys the family precious time by controlling the fire and smoke and thus lets them escape unharmed. In case of a fire, it is very rare that more than one sprinkler goes off. It is even rarer for sprinklers to go off accidentally by cigars or cigarettes.
