Finding The Right Pet
There is no doubt that your children will, at some point in their young lives
, come to you as the parent asking if they can have a pet. They may ask for a fish, cat, turtle, snake, hamster, or even a horse.But most children will all ask for the same kind of pet- a dog. Kids love dogs unless they have had a previously bad experience with them.
There are many things to consider when figuring out if a dog is right for your family or not. First thing you should consider is if you have the space to house one.
If you live in an apartment or rent out a house, chances are that you are not allowed to have pets. But if you own your own property, then you make the rules.
Is there a space for your dog to sleep? Is there room in the backyard for them to run around and play?
After you figure out if there is enough space, then start calculating out the costs of having a dog. Plan out a budget and figure out prices of food, toys, and grooming for a month.
How much food your dog eats obviously depends on their size, so try budgeting for a small dog and a big dog to see if it can fit into your budget for the month. You can try different types of brand food names to see what would be nutritionally healthy for your dog, but will not break the bank.
Do not leave out the hidden costs of owning a dog such as: grooming costs, vet visits, and any shots that the dog might need to still get. When people first start thinking about getting a dog, they forget about all these other costs because they are not necessarily a weekly or even monthly cost.
Next thing that you want to consider is what kind of dog that you have time to take care of. Some dogs require a little more care than others and a little more room.
Do you need to be able to leave your dog outside for a few hours every day while you run errands? How often will you need to take your dog to the pet shop to get groomed?
Can you fit the dog comfortably in your car? And how far and how often do you need to take your dog on a walk?
Once you figure these questions out, think about what kind of dog would fit in well with your family. Do you have younger kids that might be scared of a big dog or are your children older and need a more active dog?
Chances are that your children will want to get a brand new puppy instead of one that has already been owned. If you get a dog from the time they are a little puppy, you will have to train them.
But if you get a dog that has already been trained properly, you do not have to worry too much about the dog using your carpet as grass to go to the bathroom on. There are several informational books out there that can teach you how to train your dog.
There are also many services and small companies out there that you can go to that will help you learn how to train your dog. Some classes you can take will last for a few weeks, but other classes are just an all day seminar.
It might be a good time to involve your children in helping to train the dog so they will share some of the responsibility. Before you get a dog, make sure that you talk to your kids about the amount of work that goes into caring for a dog and make them commit to helping you.
Once you get the dog, some kids will help for a week or so and then forget about leaving you will all the dirty work. Do not be afraid to threaten to give the dog away to someone else if they neglect their duties.
Whatever dog or pet you end up getting with your family, make sure that you are all responsible for taking care of it. A little bribery to get your kids to continue helping with your pet never hurt anyone.
