It's no surprise that it is becoming increasingly difficult to live
, work and play in the United Kingdom. We may have left the recession behind in January 2010 after seeing a third consecutive rise in the country's GDP (Gross Domestic Product), but it is still not an easy place to live.Unemployment rates, for example, stood at 7.8 percent prior to entering 2010, meaning that according to the estimated population of nearly 62,100,000 people (provided by Eurostat), around 4,800,000 are unemployed in the country. This figure does not take into account those people who are not of working age, but even if 2,000,000 people were taken off of this figure, it still stands at high of almost 3,000,000 people.
In addition to this, the Bank of England have kept the base rate at a low 0.5 percent for yet another month, making 13 consecutive months so far. Whilst this figure is great for some (particularly those who are lending money), it is having a devastating effect on those who are saving, or attempting to save, money. For example, some ISA rates are as low as the base rate itself, which means that it requires for a saver to invest 10,000 pounds for a return of a measly 50 pounds.
These two points are, for some, the straws that broke the camel's back and have forced them to look elsewhere in the world for a better standard of living. With the whole globe to choose from, with the right planning, preparation and sufficient finances, anywhere is possible to move to. Australia, however, has a certain allure that seems to draw people in whenever they are looking for greener grass and applications have increased in recent years, with many associating this rise to the economic conditions elsewhere in the world.
According to The Economist's 2010 list of the world's most liveable cities, third, seventh, eight and ninth place were all taken up by Australian cities. Giving each city a rating depending on a variety of factors from job availability to governmental and overall country management, one of the aspects that is considered is the cost of living, something which is a major selling point for anyone looking to move to Australia.
Comparing petrol prices in Australia to those in the UK shows just how difficult it can be to live in the UK financially and how much better off most would be if they lived down under. The average price in the UK for unleaded petrol, as of April 2010, is 1 pounds 20 pence per litre. Hope on a plane for 24 hours and you can expect to pay 1.30 Australia dollars per litre - that's the equivalent of under 80 pence. Looking at figures provided by the AA, unleaded petrol in the UK hasn't been under 80 pence for over a decade.
Some people in the UK are simply gritting their teeth and hoping that in a few years, the effects of the recession will be over and things will be a lot less tense. Others, however, have had enough of the current conditions and have decided to make their dream of moving to Australia a reality. A relatively easy process to do with the correct planning, these people are proving that you really don't need to stay in the UK if you are looking for a better standard of living.
