Finding A Treatment For Tmj

Finding A Treatment For Tmj

I believe you need to have actually suffered from an illness to be able to understand

both the symptoms and the potential cures that you may be offered to treat it. I suffered from TMJ for around three years and tried most of the cures at one stage or another.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders

When you are suffering from TMJ or even think that you may be suffering from TMJ or you will need to find some type of specialist to get yourself treated. For me the very best place to start is to see your dentist. Any good dentist should give you a thorough exam and should also be able to complete a full and detailed review of your history of jaw symptoms. Believe it or not not all dentists who have gone through full medical training will have specialised in dealing with TMJ. There are however some who have gone through a a specialist program for TMJ and they can really help in finding out the real reason behind the symptoms youre experiencing. That would be my first tip. If you want to find real help then ask your dentist do they specialise in TMJ and if not, then ask them to recommend someone who does. This may sound a little blunt but I wasted several months with my own dentist who was not actually a specialist.

I just want you to know however that there is really no one specialist for TMJ. I did find however that some dentists had a lot more experience at treating TMJ than others. When I went to the hospital I also found that some surgeons, and consultants working in the ear, nose, and throat specialists may also have some experience in treating TMJ. TMJ Specialism

You should ask for a maxillofacial surgeon though I should caution you they are difficult to find. This is a dentist who can treat both the mouth and the jaw. Also consider talking with a surgeon, as it is sometimes necessary to correct jaw imbalance through surgery in some cases of TMJ disorders. This can also be a difficult thing to do and can be quite an expensive option. There are associated problems with this and the feedback I have seen on the various forums is that it is not really that successful.

I am not the type of person who criticises people just for the sake of it. I certainly would never question your doctors or dentist's capability, but I also believe strongly in getting a second opinion. When it comes to TMJ and the vagueness surrounding it I would even suggest you get as many opinions as you possibly can. Many doctors and dentists almost instantly recommend surgery as the only cure and if your doctor is suggesting surgery, in my opinion it isnt always the best course to correct your TMJ disorder. Alternative and even natural treatments which are more effective and cheaper are available.Finding A Treatment For Tmj

If you are going to see your doctor or dentist then get yourself prepared. Actually write down the symptoms you are experiencing as you can tend to forget these when you go for an appointment. I also found that my own dentist had a problem with listening and was more in a hurry to get me into his chair. Only when I stopped him and asked him to listen did he finally do that. These people deal with this type of problem all day long and we assume that they are the experts. What I found however was that they also quickly jump to conclusions and very quickly as well.

My advice therefore is that when you are visiting your health care provider, you should fully understand the condition on your own by reading up on it. Nobody knows you body better than youself and with a better understanding of your condition, you and your doctor together can decide together on the best course of treatment for you.

Surgery is a major step to cure TMJ and from what I have read not one that shows any great results, yet it is often quickly recommended.
