The colour as well must be taken into consideration as one would not necessarily want the diamond to look other than as white as is possible. As a rule, if yellow gold is used for the ring one can get away with a lower colour before it is picked up by the eye, so if the ring is made in platinum or white gold one should take this into consideration when purchasing the diamond.
I am often asked what would be the lowest clarity and colour to go for. The answer to this question, for me, would be the SI2 clarity and the I colour for white metal and K colour for yellow gold.
I would make an exception to this for the emerald cut, which, due to its smaller amount of facets will significantly reduce the light refraction from the diamond which will allow the eye to perceive more within it. So bear this in mind and dont go below the VS2 clarity wise for this type of cut.
