Festival Bullfighting As Fun As Miao Silver Jewelry

For years, the mysterious ethnic tribes of Miao in southern China has intrigued

the world a great deal with their delicate handmade silver jewelry rarely available in the market.

In fact, as one of the earliest tribes to live in China, the Miaos are also famous for its distinctive folklores and festival games.

Of the festival games, bullfighting is probably the most thrilling and adventurous.

The game has been around in Miao tribes for over 3, 000 years. Unlike what you see in a Spanish bullring, Miao bullfighting is done in a more sacred way. In the fight, no blood is spilled, no bull gets killed. The animal is revered here.

January 5 each year, 4 days after the New Year celebration, a bull fighting game is staged among nearby villages. Different from the Spanish bull fighting, the Miao's is a battle only between bulls.

It is battle of the blues! And no one wants to leave the game with loss and in disgrace.

Representing each village in the game is a bull that is specially raised and trained for the game.

Before the game starts, a bull is fed with glutinous rice for good energy, and some liquor to boost courage. And like a athlete in a opening ceremony, a bull gets the chance to walk around in heavy decoration.

Upon the starting signal from the judge, the bulls are unleashed for the fight. They stared each other for a few seconds, weighing up the opponent. Then, they charged toward each other with mighty forces.

They gore each other with their sharp horns and force the other to give in. When that doesn't work, the bulls then wrestle each other with locked horns and try to exhaust the enemy's energy.

Sometimes, when the bulls are in nip and tuck, the villagers have to pull them away with ropes tied to the back leg of the bulls.

When the fight is over, the loser is taken home in disgrace, while the winner stays to receive the worship of the spectators. It may fight another year and win more applauses, or it will lives out its life comfortably in retirement.

The winning village gets a handsome reward.
