This cultural melting-pot still has enough edge to keep the most adventurous traveller on their toes. As well as thriving nightlife and a burgeoning gay scene, Beirut offers plenty of opportunities for skiing and hiking in the nearby mountains.
Copenhagen
Scandinavia is hot this summer and nowhere more so than Danish capital Copenhagen. The laid-back city is the place to go for contemporary design, art and architecture as well as avant-garde food. Copenhagen is home to the world's best restaurant of 2010, Noma, as well as several cutting-edge eateries.
As well as being Scandinavia's coolest destination, Copenhagen is also one of the cheapest. Entry to all the top museums and art galleries is free, making the city an ideal destination for a cultural weekend break.
Santorini
Not only is Santorini one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands, its also one of the most fashionable. Don't go looking for white sandy beaches - the majority here are formed from black, volcanic rock. But what Santorini lacks in sand, it makes up for in infinity pools and designer hotels. The capital Fira is the place to see and be seen, with its designer shops and busy bars.
Although Athens on the Greek mainland has been disrupted by demonstrations this year, the Greek islands are as peaceful as ever. Some tourists have been put off travelling to Greece by dramatic headlines, meaning its possible to find some great value last minute deals.
San Sebastian
The Spanish city of San Sebastian is about as far away from the Costas as can be - both metaphorically speaking and in distance. Sitting on the opposite side of Spain on the North coast, the Basque city is making waves for its food. Some of Spain's most famous and highly-respected restaurants are to be found in San Sebastian, including twice Michelin-starred Arzak.
As well as top restaurants and cool bars, San Sebastian has a stunning beach popular with surfers. Art lovers can easily pop to Bilbao a short drive away and visit the Guggenheim museum, while other hotspots within easy reach include Santander and Biarritz.
Malta
Forget Ibiza - Malta is the hottest hedonist hang-out for 2010. A combination of warm, sunny climate, open air clubs and friendly locals make Malta fun as well as fashionable. Most of the party action is centred around resorts such as Portomaso and Rabat, while Malta's sister island Gozo is the place to head to for chilled-out boutique hotels.
Most tourists have typically come to Malta on package deals, although new low-cost routes have expanded opportunities for the independent traveller in recent years. Booking hotels and flights separately means travellers can split their time between the two islands and experience the contrast in pace.
