Fancy Dress Outfits: A Simple Robot You Could Create With Your Kids

Kids love dressing up. Perhaps they try on mum or dad's clothes, perhaps they design costumes based on their own ideas. Sometimes their ideas for fancy dress outfits might run out though. Like when your child is invited to a fancy dress party and asks for your help in coming up with a cool idea.

While there are many retailers and online stores selling everything from little fireman suits to little princess wings, you will often find that lots of the fun in fancy dress lies in coming up with your own ideas. There are some cheap and easy costumes you can improvise from items you already have at home. This article describes a fancy dress robot. You can make it together with your child to stimulate their craft skills and imagination.

As an adult you can probably make or buy an outfit which is much better than your child could make for himself or herself. However, with your help and advice, you can stimulate your child's imagination by helping them to design and make their own special outfit.

One simple idea which can be made by all children except the very youngest is a robot outfit. You will need two cardboard boxes: one for the body, one for the head. You can first tell your child how you are going to make it together, perhaps get them to draw a picture of how it is going to look when it is finished.

You now need to find your two boxes. You need a small one to make the robot's head, and a larger one to make the robot's body. You should cut the two small flaps off the large box, and then cut holes into the larger flaps. These will be arm holes, so that when the child pushes their arms through the box sits in from of the child's body. You also need to make holes in the small box for eyes and mouth.

Now you can ask the child to help you paint the robot. Although grey seems the most sensible color you can let the child pick the color. If they want a pink robot then so be it! Remember to check what colors of paints you already have first.

An alternative to paint is to cover the robot with tin foil. You probably have some in the kitchen already. When you stick this on using white (PVA) glue you should have a shiny metallic robot.

Now add some buttons and switches to the front. Anything suitable from around the home could be used: sweet papers would make shiny buttons, or you could use bottle tops instead.

Another idea is to have a robot with a TV screen on his tummy. The adult can cut a hole for the TV screen, while the child draws the TV picture on a piece of card. Alternatively the child could cut pictures from a magazine and glue them to the card. Now glue the card so that it sits behind the TV screen, and you have a robot with built in television.
