, the Imperial War Museum is the flagship British national museum out of the three located in London. Set up in 1917 to record the Empire's contribution to the First World War, the institution has since expanded its collections with succeeding wars as well as its growing influence on the world at large. Having occupied Sydenham Hill's Crystal Palace at its inception the museum was later moved to South Kensington's Imperial Institute before finally settling in its current location at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Southwark in 1936. Home to nearly 10,700,000 items including official files, documents and other archives the museum also displays video, film and photographic material in addition to an extensive art collection. With a well-stocked library and an exhibit featuring models of military aircraft and vehicles the institution provides a dynamic view of the world's greatest wars and the remnants they left behind in human history and warcraft as we know it.The highlights of the permanent galleries at the museum include the Large Exhibits Gallery which exhibits an extensive vehicle and weapon collection as well as the First World War galleries and the Second World War galleries which deal with the complex political backdrop and after effects of the two great conflicts. The Monty: Master of the Battlefield exhibit and the Conflicts Since 1945 gallery are also captivating points of interest while the Secret War display focuses on the mysterious world of spies, covert operations and espionage in contemporary warfare with MI5 tactics, communications equipment and secret codes. The Holocaust Exhibition is also a frequented quarter of the museum as it documents the horrific annihilation of the Jewish population by Nazi Germany while the Crimes Against Humanity section focuses on other instances of genocide and ethnic conflicts such as the Cambodian, Bosnian and Rwandan atrocities with a specially made 30-minute film as its central focus.
Artistic renderings of the first and second world wars occupy two gallery suites on the second floor in addition to regularly alternating special exhibits such as award winning artist Jeremy Dellar's "Baghdad, 5 March 2007" collection, the "Remembering Fromelles" exhibit, Horrible Histories: Terrible Trenches Exhibition and the Children's War display which examines the impact of warfare on the younger generation. Hosting an annual film festival each year the museum also offers interactive activities for the whole family including the Mud, Blood and Poppycock initiative and We Will Remember Them programme where you can fashion your own remembrance poppy for fallen heroes.
