Experience The Globes Premier Event At The Aberdeen International Youth Festival

, the Aberdeen International Youth Festival is a two week event that showcases the artistic talents of the worlds youth in all its unbridled splendour. Attracting over 30,000 visitors it is also one of Scotlands premier cultural festivals which also secures the participation of over a thousand youth performers from seventy plus countries across the globe.Created in the late 1960s according to the visionary concept of the Music Director of the Midland Youth Orchestra Blyth Major and the Chairman of the International Youth Foundation Lionel Bryer, this former orchestral festival has now turned into a jam packed celebration of performing arts with over 70 events. These include open-air shows, a colorful parade and other programmes in community settings. Beginning with a breathtaking parade the festival opens with a bang as the vibrant procession makes its way to the opening ceremony at the Aberdeen Music Hall through the heart of the city.
Highlights include gala occasions in some of Aberdeens most prestigious venues including The Music Hall, The Lemon Tree and of course His Majesty's Theatre in addition to churches and local cummunity locales such as Queen's Cross Church. The Aberdeen International Youth Festivals extensive programme includes classical music events, song recitals, ballet performances, modern and traditional dance items, symphony orchestras, world music and even jazz ensembles. The most popular item on the programme is perhaps the revolutionary youth opera production named Opera Garden which has performed such cult classics as The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Cos fan tutte, Carmen and The Turn of the Screw in past festivals.
Nearly 50 renowned theatres, dance/music groups and numerous performing arts academies have taken part in the festival, making it a cultural melee of monumental scale and scope. The event has also become a mechanism to create global works of art through collaboration and education. Such initiatives include The Dance Lab, Little Larks, The Trad Music Project residential music programme and AIYF Compose! where budding composers are recognized and honoured.
