. It is said that Edward Williams, a member of the colonial elite, proposed to his wife Jessie in Italy at Lake Como. They built the namesake house as a tribute to their engagement in 1847, merging classical Italian with Regal Australian architecture.Unfortunately the couple together with their four children had no choice but to sell the property to an investor who later sold it to Scots John Brown and Helen, his wife. This couple added another storey, towers and out buildings and hired professional landscapers to completely change the gardens making it the breathtaking wonder it is today.
However they too could not hold on to the property and it then changed hands to Charles Armytage and Caroline, his wife, in 1864. The property remained within the Armytage family for nearly 95 years and one of the daughters' - Constance's - marriage to Captain Arthur Fitzpatrick, aide-de-camp of the Governor of Victoria reintroduced the romantic element that was originally a part of the property's aura, through the spectacular wedding.
Today, 160 years later, the Como Historic House and Gardens have proven to be a wonderful tourist attraction. Visitors are guided through a day in the life of the 19th century elite.
