Every Choice A Trade-off

Every Choice A Trade-off

For every option, for every experience you choose

, you trade off untold alternatives - you give up something. When you commit yourself to any activity you pay a price - the price is all those things you could have done. Every opportunity has a cost. Every choice is a trade-off. How are you trading?

Despite disparity in talents or treasure, we all have one thing in equal measure - we all have the same number of seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, and hours in a day. The sands of time over the course of a life are measured independently, but the grains of sand each day are offered in equal parts.

Each day is a gift - an opportunity. Each new day is an occasion to spend, invest, or waste. Time is yours to trade. No matter how poorly one might squander time, a new dawn is a fresh new prospect. Each day is a chance to choose differently - a chance to choose again.

So how do you use your time?

In our consumption society too many people spend their allotted days attempting to secure money and power. People seek these things because of a mistaken belief that money and power bring happiness.

If your ultimate goal is happiness, don't be led astray thinking money and power are the means to that end. They are not. The treasure you seek, the fulfillment you desire might be closer than you think.

Russell H. Conwell, the founder of Temple University, traveled the United States early in the 20th century relaying an ancient tale of Persia he titled, Acres of Diamonds. The story tells of a man who sold his farm and abandoned his family to search for congealed drops of sunlight, God's tears - diamonds. The man's search ended in vain - he died broke, alone and in despair - finally throwing himself into the sea. However, soon after the landowner had deserted his farm for his futile quest, the new owner of that man's property discovered countless diamonds in the man's backyard. Had the searcher bothered to look for what he thought he lacked right on his own grounds he would have found his acres of diamonds.

Remember, every choice is a trade-off. In choosing something, you give up everything else. Don't waste your choice. Don't succumb to the lure of money and power. Invest the time of your life doing what you love. You will never pass this way again - use your time wisely. Make the best trade you can in each and every moment. Make each trade the time of your life.
