Esophageal Cancer In People Over 50
Generally esophageal cancer increases stage by stage as the patient moves from one
stage to another and also the life time or rate of survival of the patient goes on decreasing stage by stage. The esophageal cancer may be caused due to many reasons such as the life style of the patient, health condition of the patient, age, sex, heredity, food habits of the patients etc.
Based on a research conducted it was found that the men had more risks of acquiring esophageal cancer when compared to men. Especially the people who are obese are more likely to get the disease of esophageal cancer. In 1983, around 2600 men were diagnosed with esophageal cancer but in recent survey it was found that around 5100 men were diagnosed with that disease.
Similarly the rates in women also rose but it was very less from 5.5 percent in one lakh people to 8 percent. The main reason behind this is obesity. The rate of survival decreases stage by stage as the patient moves from one stage to another. In the initial 0th stage, the rate of survival is nearly 70 percent and the cancer affected cells are present only in the inner most layer of the esophagus or epithelium. In the next stage (first stage) of esophageal cancer, the survival rate is nearly 60% and the cancerous cells will invade and go beyond the epithelium layer to reach the submucosa.
In the second stage, the survival rate is initially 40% and the cancerous cells spread further invading the muscular layer of the esophagus and also the adventitia. The survival rate is nearly 20% in the later part of the second stage and the cancer cells spread beyond the epithelium.
In the third stage which is also called locally advanced cancer, the adventitia layer of the esophagus is invaded and it also spreads to lymph nodes and near by organs and the survival rate for this third stage of esophageal cancer is only 15%.
In the fourth stage (final stage), initially the rate of survival may be 15% but as the cancerous cells starts spreading into the organs near by, the survival rate is merely low and is only 5%. Finally the cell invades into other organs, lymph nodes etc in the last stage of the patient.
Generally, the overall 5 year survival rate for the esophageal cancer will remain approximately 20-25% for all stages. It also depends on the spread of the disease whether it includes the lymph nodes or not. The patients suffering from esophageal cancer without lymph node involvement will have a better prognosis and survival rate when compared to those patients with lymph nodes.
As age is also one of the main factors for the attack of esophageal cancer, the patients above the age of 50 have to be taken care of if they are diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
