It's not an entirely foreign dental procedure. Most people recognize it under the term root canal. In more formal terms, it belongs under the specialization of endodontics. This is the part of dentistry that stresses the care and treatment of the gum portion known as pulp. This is found at the middle of the tooth, underneath the crown and extends through the roots.

It's not an earth shattering event to have to go through endodontic therapy. The gum pulp contains nerves, tissues and vessels. These were once crucial to the health of growing teeth. Mature people however lose their need for pulps because nourishment becomes the responsibility of the gums. There is therefore nothing alarming about having to lose pulp.

Not everyone needs to undergo the option. It is often recommended only for individuals who experience bacterial infection. This usually stems from severe cavities that have gone beyond the surface of the tooth, infecting the structures underneath. Since antibiotics alone cannot treat far beneath, the one other acceptable choice would be to undergo endodontic surgery.

Based on your symptoms, you might be able to guess your need for endodontic therapy. This however should always be confirmed by a dentist first. As with most other conditions, diagnosis proceeds from first identifying symptoms. If swelling and sensitivity are apparent, then you might indeed have a pulp problem. Dentists however, assess patient condition further through visual examination and x-rays. Modern clinics now also use electrical gadgets to help determine pulp condition. It is only after a comprehensive evaluation can you safely choose to have root canal treatment.

If you've had tooth extraction before, you can reasonably expect endodontic treatment to be more complicated and time consuming. Once anesthesia has been given, the crown is removed and then the pulp is taken out. The pulp has to be completely cleaned out before shaping for filling can proceed. Gutta percha filler resembling rubber is then used to fill up the vacant space. Crown restoration is a succeeding step that has to be performed at a later date.

Complications may result from the endodontic process. Similar to any surgical procedures, infection is an entirely possible occurrence. This however is not the only issue you'd have to worry about. You may also experience damage to the tooth especially if the roots can't easily be detected. Pulp removal may also be incomplete, in which case, you may have to undergo a new procedure.

You don't have to imagine that you will eventually have to experience endodontic therapy. If you do have symptoms though, choosing to disregard them can prove disastrous to your tooth. You may have to opt for tooth extraction. You might think that this isn't such a bad thing but removing a tooth can lead to changes in the alignment of your teeth and in your bite.
