"End of the Rainbow" honours the life of the singer- actress, Judy Garland. It is a relatively a new play based on Judy Garland's last days and her tragic bout with drugs and alcohol. The play chronicles the actresses later years as she battled the drugs while she tried to piece together her career and personal life. It also celebrates Judy Garland's zest for life and some of her greatest song hits.
Tracie Bennett stuns audiences night after night with her performance as Judy. Many who watch her perform as Judy are convinced that the spirit of Judy Garland has truly possessed her. Tracie has won a Laurence Olivier award for best Supporting Performance in "She Loves Me back" in 1995. Bennett has a long and fabulous career in Television, film and stage. Bennett trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in Clapham, London.
The musical "End of the Rainbow", London opened at Trafalgar Studios on 22 November 2010 where it is currently running. The award winning play was written by Peter Quilter. The show first debuted in Sydney, Australia at the Sydney Opera House in 2005. The show travelled to London in February, 2010 at Northhampton's Royal & Dengate. The same production, directed by Terry Johnson then came to Trafalgar Studios.
Terry Johnson has received much acclaim for his hard work with "End of the Rainbow". Johnson over the years has won nine British Theatre awards for his fine work on the West End. Johnson has worked both as a director and as a writer in West End productions like, "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest", "Hitchcock Blonde", "Entertaining Mr. Sloane", "The Graduate" and "The Memory of Water".
The musical begins in December 1968 and focuses on the last months leading up to Judy's tragic death. It deals with the Judy's lifelong struggles with drugs and alcohol and her flawed relationship with her last husband, Mickey Deans, played by Stephen Hagen. Audiences experience Judy's jammed and exhausting schedule as she tries to mount a comeback. They also relive Judy's true love, her relationship with her gay piano player, Anthony, played by Hilton McRae. In the end Bennett exposes audiences to the real Garland with her tough as nails personality and her sharp wit dulled by the booze and drugs.
