Emergency First Aid Treatments For Gouty Arthritis

Emergency First Aid Treatments For Gouty Arthritis

Of all types of arthritis, gouty arthritis is the one that gives the most torturing kind of pain. Gouty inflammation ambushes out of the blue without any early signs of warning. It usually attacks you in the middle of the night when you are sleeping soundly. You suddenly wake up with a red swollen big toe which has become so sensitive that even a light touch on the blanket can send a wave of throbbing pains that make you cry for help.

If you do nothing about it, this painful gouty arthritis can last for days to weeks. Thus, it is important to seek proper treatments to rectify the inflammation before it further disrupts your daily routines. With that gouty inflammation on your feet, it is very hard for you to walk, even just a few steps. You cannot go to work, you cannot attend any social event, and sometimes even going to the toilet is a big challenge for you.

If you are living far away from hospital or it is not convenient to drive out in the middle of the night, here is a list of emergency first aid treatments for gouty arthritis that you can apply yourself to minimize the painful inflammation before you make it to see the doctor:

1. Drink a Glass of Baking Soda Water

Baking soda or chemically known as sodium bicarbonate can neutralize the uric acid and prevent further formation of urate crystal, which is the triggering agent of the gout attack. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm drinking water and drink it.

Warning: Baking Soda Water is just temporary uric acid lowering method. It cannot be treated as long term treatment for gouty arthritis. Over consumption of sodium bicarbonate can result in high blood pressure and other side effects.

2. Soak Your Feet Into Hot Warm Water

It is easy for the blood to flow down to the feet because of the gravitational and heart pumping forces, but it is very hard for it to flow back up. This is why uric acid tends to deposit at lower joints before creeping up to upper joints. Increasing the temperature of the feet can promote upward blood flow and help to dissolve the urate crystals.

Reminder: Do not soak your feet in cold ice water to relieve the gout pain. Freezing your feet can only temporary numb the nerves, but it will further slow down the blood flow and promote the formation of more urate crystals in the joints.

3. Eat Some Cherries

Cherries contain a natural pigment known as anthocyanin which is anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory. Anthocyanin can help to reduce the pain and inflammation of the gouty arthritis joints. Bear in mind that cherries only work during the inflammation, it cannot lower down the uric acid levels in your body. Professional advice must be sought in order to manage your blood uric acid level.

These first aid treatments for gouty arthritis are results of personal experiences of many gout patients. The results vary between individuals. This recommendation is only for your reference only and should not be treated as professional medical advice.
