Eating disorders among teens has been rising for a few decades. In a 7 seven year period, there has been an estimated 120 percent rise in eating disorders for children under the age of 12. Eating disorders in the past have generally been problematic with white teenage girls. There has been a rise in the eating disorders which affect people of a race and boys and lower income. The most alarming rise is among boys who represent roughly 5 to 10 percent of teens with eating disorders.
Doctors are unsure why they are seeing such a dramatic increase in eating disorders. There are many factors that contribute to eating disorders among teens and adults. Media images of very thin women contribute but doctors are finding that there may be genetic influences to eating disorders, as well.
