Easy IEP Help for Parents of Children With Learning Issues

Preparing for your first IEP can be an overwhelming proposition. The very fact that your child is struggling at school is enough to worry any parent. But uncovering that your child might need a specialized Individualized Education Program (IEP) terrorizes even the toughest parents.

Parents regularly get mixed emotions before an IEP and depending on the gender, one of two scenarios generally surface.

The mother repeatedly is emotionally distraught and feels a need to do anything available to assist her child. The father on the contrary is enraged at the proposition that there is anything wrong with his son/daughter and that the teacher made a mistake.

There isn't anything incorrect with this thinking by either parent and not all situations are like this. But many times this happens and it can inject slight resentment between the parents, the school, or both.

The important point to keep in mind is that the child in all probability has some form of learning difficulty and any help that can be furnished by the school to secure the scholastic progress of the child is crucial.

Individualized Education Programs are frequently difficult for all individuals and for a variety reasons. So, how do you find a way to have an Easy IEP?

Make sure you show up for the meeting. There are plenty of things at school that parents don't attend like sports, and other events because of time constraints or conflicting schedules. An Individualized Education Program is a one-time, annual event that you NEED to attend.

Participate. It is critical that the child's parents stay involved in the IEP throughout. Remain up-to-date on the child's progress and follow up after the meeting to make certain that goals are being met.

Preparation is imperative. The parents need to commence the IEP process with an open mind, provide as much background information about the son or daughter as possible, and be determined to learn as much as possible about the challenges ahead.

Be flexible. Even though the child will most probably be placed in the regular classroom, a portion of the subjects will be adapted. This means that some of the materials may be different from what the other classmates will be studying or that some of the school day will be involved with resource teachers such as an OT or PT.

Easy IEP Help is an undertaking to provide some recommendations and information for family members involved in the Individualized Education Plan process.

After years attending Individualized Education Plans and much time on the phone and exchanging emails with friends either attending their first IEP or having a challenging time in follow-up, it was a no-brainer to put together a website for parents of children with learning disabilities trying to find a way to an Easy IEP. The result is a work in progress named, "Easy IEP Help," that can be found at: http://www.EasyIEPhelp.com.
