Easing Infant Nasal Congestion---4 Ways To Help Your Baby Breathe Easier

Few things are more stressful than watching your baby struggle to breathe

. Congestion and stuffy nose can cause anxiety for your baby that often result in restlessness, inability to sleep, and loss of appetite. The following 4 suggestions are steps that you can take right now that will ease nasal congestion.

Clear Nasal Passages---Extra mucous that clogs the nose can result from the common cold virus or from sensitivity to an allergen that is present where your baby spends the majority of time. Since your child is unable to clear the nose by blowing, help from you will be needed.

Loosening the mucous by spraying the nostrils with a saline solution, then suctioning it out with the syringe will provide a temporary relief from congestion. Consult your pediatrician if there is anything other than clear in color as color is generally an indication that there is infection.

Opt For Non-Allergenic Flooring----Even though wall-to-wall carpet feels fabulous under the feet and makes a soft place for baby to play, it is difficult to clean well and traps allergens easily. Dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores are hard to totally remove with normal cleaning and these can trigger congestion if your baby is at all sensitive to them.

Surfaces that are able to be cleaned more thoroughly include wood, laminate, or tile flooring with a generous sprinkling of area rugs that can be machine washed regularly.

Go Organic---Many fabrics are treated with chemicals that make them flame retardant, and less likely to need ironing. Fabric make-up of clothing, mattress covers, upholstery, and draperies often contain synthetic fibers. If you are noticing an increase in congestion, constant exposure to these items could be a huge part of the problem.

Opt for organic fibers, clothing, and bedding whenever possible. These products are chemical free and use natural fibers that are less likely to cause problems. And even though they sometimes cost more, reducing the congestion your baby experiences is a huge pay off.

Continually Remove Airborne Irritants---Because our homes are so tightly sealed with storm windows and doors, once allergens get in, it is next to impossible to get them out unless you filter the air. And if your baby tends to be sensitive to the normal household pollutants such as dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, pollen, or pet dander, the only way to take them out of the air is to use an air purifier

Because many of the allergens that cause congestion are particles, HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) filtration is best for the job. A cleaner with this type of filter takes out 99,997 out of every 10,000 particles down to.3 microns in size. And since bacteria and viruses travel by attaching to airborne particulates, removing them also removes airborne germs as well.

A cleaner which also contains carbon cloth can remove chemical odors, fumes, and gases that may still be in the air from a freshly painted and newly furnished nursery. These suggestions are a pro-active way to help your baby breathe easier and provide a healthier environment for all.
