E-commerce Project Coordinator Finds His Dream Job Through Networking

I am a Project Coordinator for a highly successful e-commerce corporation located in southern Tennessee

. We help to organize and distribute mass-production software solutions for companies hoping to organize inventories through database implementation. I have been employed at my current position for over a decade and have enjoyed every moment of it. I found this position by chance once I finished my MBA degree at The University of Tennessee. I had extensively interned throughout my entire college career and was approached by a co-intern while hunting for jobs in person. He had found an upstart company which was looking to hire executives and other high-priority positions for the launch of their new services. He ended up joining the company as an executive and recommended me for my current position.

All in all, I had been hunting for a job for maybe 4 months before finally landing this one. Aside from going door to door asking about available positions, I had also been scouring Craigslist and trying to get my resume uploaded to as many professional career sites as possible. It was my opinion that only by taking as many chances as possible and getting your name out to as many people as you can, would you ever have a chance at truly succeeding in meeting your life-goals. Whether or not my getting this job was a stroke of luck or something else entirely, I can honestly say that I love what I do and I'm glad to be able to come to work each day with a smile on my face.

I am of the opinion that the most important thing about the professional job search process is networking. I have found that it truly does not matter how good you are at something if you don't know anyone in the business. Now, that's not to say that unqualified people will get jobs based solely on who they know, because that's simply not true. It takes a combination of great skill and the ability to get to know new people to truly succeed. At least, that has been my experience. I studied hard to get to the point of being able to land a job doing something that I love, but I would never have found this job if not for my great friend, who was already getting their foot into the door in this business.

My previous searches were proving to be fruitless, which is why I am thankful every single day that I began to network with people early on in my college career. Something inside of me knew that if I networked enough, I could make great things happen. I had a Business Administration professor in my freshman year lecture the class about the fundamentals of communication within and outside of the workplace. It was probably the most important lesson I've learned and it was because of that class that I began taking an interest in meeting new people.

The best three pieces of advice I could ever give an aspiring professional is to be courteous, prompt and always exceed your goals. Show up to your job interviews early. All potential employers love promptness. It shows that you are far more serious than your competitors and it tells them that you are prepared to give it your all each and every day. By being courteous to your boss, clients and other co-workers, you are essentially showing that you are a likable person who is fully capable of fitting in with the corporate culture. There is nothing more important at a career-level job than allowing the environment around you to start feeling like a second home. You always want your co-workers and clients to feel comfortable enough around you. This is a key part in building professional relationships. These relationships are what keep the business afloat. Lastly, I have found that by setting hard, but realistic goals and then exceeding them, I stay ahead of the game and everyone is playing catch-up to me. That is what you want in a business. I would never put myself in a place that forced me to lag behind on the job. It's not professional and it makes you seem like a replaceable part of the machine.

I practice these key pieces of advice every single day on the job and even in my personal life. I want everyone around me to know that while I mean business, I'm also a human being who is capable of understanding and helping people achieve their own unique goals. On the job, I know that I am not the only person there who matters. Once my goals have been more than met, I do whatever I can to help people meet their goals. I have always believed in the power of teamwork. Furthermore, I believe in promptness in every decision that is made both professionally and personally. It shows the people around you that you care enough about them to want to step up and it happen as much as they do. As I have always said: "You're either all in, or totally out." There is no in-between for me. I am always the first guy through the door and one of the last guys to leave each and every day. My employers appreciate my efforts and my family appreciates the support that those efforts afford them. I couldn't be happier doing anything else.
