Durban in South Africa is likely to become a huge tourist attraction once this great city by the sea is propelled onto the global stage with the staging of the World Cup in 2010. This once relatively unknown city is sure to capture the attention of the world's tourists with the tropical year-round temperatures, great surf and beautiful surrounding areas.

In the city itself, various companies offer Durban city tours as well as cruises around the harbour and out to sea. Ushaka Marine World in Durban is one of the cities best attractions, housing Africa's biggest aquarium and a waterpark. Ushaka is also only a few steps from the warm Indian Ocean and sunny beaches of Durban beachfront. Many companies offer 'booze cruises' as well, including dolphin viewings.

Most Durban hotels are situated along the famous Golden Mile, but many hotels and resorts can be found further north as well, in resorts like Umhlanga and Umdloti. Here you can find many ways to relax in comfort while taking in the sea air, and most hotels cater for young children, with children's clubs and many activites for the kids to take part in while you relax.

If you fancy a genuine African safari, Tala Game Reserve is only 45 minutes drive from Durban, but does not have the full "Big Five". If the Big Five is what you are after, then go to Hluhluwe Game Reserve, about 2 hours drive north of Durban. This is a fantastic safari park that you can easily get to in day trip from Durban, or spend a few days there in a lovely rustic lodge right in the heart of the African bush. The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains and the tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho are also easily reachable from Durban.
