What Is a Dental Hygienist?

The dental hygienist is a person who is not quite a dentist, but then neither is he a dental assistant or nurse. In fact, this is a trained professional who has to pass a clinical exam as well as a board exam to get his Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license to practice his craft.

Another term for dental hygienist is oral health professional whose main objective is to protect your gums and teeth. However, it goes beyond this to encompass the overall health of the person. This is because the health of a person teeth can affect other parts of his body, so keeping the teeth and gums healthy, in a way, will make sure that you do not get sick because of rotten teeth or bleeding gums.

A dental hygienist must go to school to get accredited, similar to a pharmacist, nurse, or any other medical profession that deals directly with patient care. You may also find dental hygienists in schools and universities as teachers, researchers, or even working in the registrars office. Dental hygienists are also found working in community health clinics, hospitals, public health offices, nursing homes, in the corporate world, and in private clinics.

The requirements to practice oral health care as a dental hygienist is not standard. It can differ slightly depending on where you live. So, if you are to approach a dental hygienist in the East Coast, you might not find the same services as those working in the other end of the U.S.

There are standard practices that are covered such as conducting diagnostics which includes getting your dental history, charting your current status, checking for infection or disease, and going through x-rays and charts and making sense of them.

Other functions also include professional cleaning to remove plaque or calculus, applying sealants, anesthetics which could be local or nitrous oxide; educate, teach and counsel patients on proper dental care; and even encourage or implement a quit smoking program for chronic smokers.

The advantage of seeing a dental hygienist over a dentist is avoidance of pre-conceived tensions regarding pain and the dreaded drill. Everyone is taught to fear the dentist, and so we do. In comes the dental hygienist who uses no tools that could cause pain, and is suppose to be the stepping stone before seeing a dentist. You see, if you have no cavities, and all you need is a professional cleaning, then you can see a dental hygienist instead. Its the perfect solution for children who give you a hard time about going to the dental clinic.

You can expect the dental hygienist to be good with his hands, gentle to the touch, and never abrasive or as scary as the dentist. In some areas in the United States, dental hygienists outperform and out number dentists because they do not need to go through the long, tedious process to become a dental hygienist as a dentist would have to go through. Today, it is actually one of the courses or programs most sought after because the average pay rate for one hour consultation is over $32, which by many standards is quite impressive.
