Sunburn is an injury that seems to have become a common site amongst holidaymakers and tourists. However, sunburn it must not be forgotten that sunburn is something that could become very serious, and lead to other, more serious complications, such as sunstroke. It can be frighteningly easy to become sunburnt, especially if you're in a foreign country, so if you want to avoid the dreaded bright red, sore and uncomfortable skin, here are a few tips to help you keep safe and healthy in the sun whilst on holiday.

Wear Sunscreen

It has many names, including sunscreen, sun cream, sun lotion and sun block, but the principal of every different brand and type of sunscreen is the same: to protect the wearer's skin form being burnt by the sun. It works by either absorbing or reflecting the sun's rays and thus protects the skin underneath from harm. It comes in various forms, from the standard lotion, to sprays, gels and blocks, and while many are advertised to water, heat and sweat resistant, the product must be reapplied after the user has been in water, and it must also be reapplied frequently, such as every two hours, in order to ensure that the skin remains protected from the sun. Apply it 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to ensure that it's been fully absorbed and will therefore be working effectively before you go out into the sun. Also make sure that you are wearing a sunscreen with an SPF or sun protection factor or 12 or above, as products with a lower SPF will not be as useful in fighting the sun's rays.Don't Let Sunburn Ruin Your Holiday

Wear Protective Clothing

There are some parts of your body that will be more susceptible to sun burn, such as the nose, lips, shoulders, the back of the neck and the feet. These are the areas that must be and can be protected from sun explore very easily, especially by wearing protective clothing. Hats, especially wide-brimmed hats are very effective for protecting the head, scalp, the back of the neck and even the shoulders, as it will cover these areas and keep them in the shade. Try to keep your feet covered if you can, as they are a particularly painful part of your body to get sunburnt. As well as covering them, with a towel, or keeping them in the shade, have sunscreen on them at all times and ensure you don't forget to reapply it on your feet when you reapply it to the rest of your body.

Keep Hydrated

While drinking water, (not fizzy juice or alcohol) will not protect you from sunburn, it will protect you from becoming dehydrated, which is a major cause of sunstroke, a particularly unpleasant and potentially dangerous condition that causes the body's heat regulating system to fail when exposed to very hot temperatures. This leads to hyperventilation, high temperature, vomiting, weakness, fainting and an upset stomach. Drinking lots of water, wearing sunscreen and avoiding taxing exercise whilst in the sun will help protect you from this, and not lead to your Gran Canaria holiday being cut short.
