The Breeds Origins

During the 17th century, Dutch traders started to travel to the southern parts of Africa to trade. One of the most common tribes living near the ports would be the Khoikhoi people, known to have a local breed of dog used as guard and hunting dogs. They were described as odd-looking, but they were noted for their ferocity and bravery. Once the Europeans started to build colonies in AfricasCape Peninsula, they also bought with them a number of different dog breeds, like Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, Foxhounds and Terriers. These European dogs interbred with the African Khoikhoi dogs and started the foundations of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. All that cross breeding has developed a dog that is fast and intelligent. However, it has also about K9 diseases such as degenerative myelopathy and hip dysplasia.
